Part 1: Truth

Philippians 4:8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

How can we bring truth into our homes?

This month we are focusing on how we can incorporate “truth” into our homes. I believe it starts with speaking “truth” and thinking “truth” we can start to bring “The Truth” into our homes. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6). Therefore, to bring truth into our homes is inviting the person of Jesus.

As you read through the following Bible verses and quotes think about how you can incorporate them into your homes and into your children’s lives.

What does the Bible say?

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

Romans 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

John 8:32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

John 16:13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

Ephesians 4:25 Therefore, putting away lying, “Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbour, ” for we are members of one another.

What does the Bible say?

The Bible says that Jesus is the truth and if we know Him, then we know the truth. It also speaks of the Holy Spirit as the spirit of truth. If we allow the Holy Spirit to come in and transform our minds, then we are inviting the Spirit of Truth into our minds. As our minds are transformed, then we will be able to speak and think truth. As we ground ourselves in The Truth we can discern truth.

What does Charlotte Mason say?

“The mother who trains her child to strict accuracy of statement about things small and great fortifies him against temptations to the grosser forms of lying; he will not readily colour a tale to his own advantage, suppress facts, equivocate [which means to use ambiguous language to try to conceal the truth], when the statement of the simple fact has become a blinding habit, and when he has not been allowed to form the contrary vicious habit of playing fast and loose with words.” (Volume 1, p.165)

“We should always have something worthwhile to think about, that we may not let our minds dwell upon unworthy matters.”(Volume 4, p. 21)

[In reference to Bible lessons]“By-and-by they will perceive, and discard, if necessary, the accidental circumstances with which the truth is clothed upon.” (Volume 1, p.250)

Charlotte Mason says we need to develop and practise the habit of truthfulness. This is one of the fundamental habits Charlotte says is needed when raising children. To support the idea of thinking and speaking truth, we can allow the child to find the truth in the Bible lessons, as well as read and dwell on all that is worthwhile through the use of living books and narration.
